Long Maritime Traditions
Tananger harbour is famous for herring fishing and the sale and export of lobster since the 17th century. Most of all, the port is known for the many pilot vessels that in its day were based here and on the island of Rott. Tananger inner harbour is one of the few natural harbours on Jæren and bears the mark of long maritime traditions.
Coastal Culture Collection
The harbour's lobster fishing history is well preserved in the Coastal Culture Collection. The coastal culture collection is on display in Melingsjöhuset by the harbour. It houses one of the country's largest collections of boats and artefacts from Tananger's coastal culture. The collection gives us a good insight into the history of Tananger and how people lived here in the past.
Peaceful and charming
Today the Port of Tananger is a peaceful and charming small boat and guest harbour with beautiful outdoor areas. Here you will find many gems where you can sit down and enjoy the view towards the sea. At the edge of the sea is the Hummeren hotel. The hotel offers comfortable accommodation, activities and delicious seafood in a maritime environment.
A stone's throw away from the Hummeren Hotel you will find the old country store. It was here that Sola's oldest company, D. Danielsen, started its business in 1774. At the heart of the harbour is the Monsen House, which dates from 1731, and one of the first houses in Tananger. The house is named after loss older - or master pilot captain, Gabriel Monsen, who ran a guest house. Today the house is in private ownership and it is not possible to visit the house inside.
Tananger Tour
Tananger inner harbour is the starting point for the great Tananger tour. The tour takes you through historical sites, and on a trail all the way to the sea bath at Myklebust.
The centre of Tananger is a short walk from the harbour and offers a variety of shopping. Here you will find two shopping senters and several eateries.
